1 Please to introduce ourselves.
I am a research associate at Columbia University Teachers College. I primarily work on programs to feed children and adolescents. My undergraduate major was Nutrition Sciences, and my graduate education in nutrition education and nutrition behaviors. Today, chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity are prevalent and prevention efforts to protect our children from these conditions. The pursuit is influenced by my family. My grandfather, father and brother are pediatricians, and I always wanted to do something beneficial for children. In modern society, what you eat affects your health so much, especially for vulnerable children, caregivers should pay more attention to what you are feeding their children. I am a registered dietitian and hold others in the behavior of Nutrition, which combines food science and behavioral psychology. Self-knowledge alone is not enough to change eating behavior. There are personal, social and environmental motivating factors that determine the individual's eating behavior. Understanding these individual components is very important to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
2 Where they are currently doing?
I work at the Center for Food and Environment, which is part of the Nutrition Program at Columbia University Teachers College.
3 What is your knowledge?
I am certified in childhood, adolescence and weight of the American Dietetic Association. My current research focus is childhood obesity prevention and treatment, and my expertise in data management and analysis and evaluation of nutrition programs. Currently, I am project manager of research obesity prevention program for elementary school children under the age of the primary investigator of the faculty and professor at Columbia University. Basically, I would like to understand children's eating behaviors and their motivation to change unhealthy behaviors to healthier ones. I am a member of the Company Nutrition education and behavior, NYC Nutrition Education Network, American Dietetic Association, the International Society for eating behaviors and physical activity, obesity, Society and the American Association of evaluation.
4 Could you briefly summarize the GFCF diet?
I personally researched gluten-free casein-free diet because my niece has Asperger's syndrome. 6 Do you recommend it for children with autism?
the answer is yes and no. You must understand your child's nutritional needs before you think about any dietary intervention. He or she may have a food allergy, sensitivity or intolerance, not only from gluten and casein containing foods, but also from other food sources. I also recommend that you read Eating for Autism: The Revolutionary 10-Step Nutrition Plan to help treat your child's autism, Asperger's or ADHD by Elizabeth Strickland. The book describes the nutritional problems with autistic children well. As the book explains, a large percentage of children with autism, Asperger's, PDD-NOS, ADD, ADHD and struggle with one or more nutritional problems, such as nutritional deficiencies, feeding problems, food allergies, food intolerances, chemical sensitivities, gastrointestinal disorders, exposure to neuro-toxins, or a negative drug and nutrient interactions. Children with autism also often have dysfunctional immune systems, and inadequate detoxification process. You really need to understand their children's problems before you follow any specific diet. Keep in mind that your child may have different reactions to the diet in relation to the story you have heard from others. You need to pay greater attention to your child's behavior and mood changes, once you start this diet. For example, my sister tried this diet and monitor her daughter's behavior and mood changes very carefully. She decided to stop the diet because there is no difference seen. Psychological therapy alone is effective enough to improve her behavior.
